Re-Turning the Gaze: VJing and Building Original Content: Workshop
Balustrade (3rd Floor)
The workshop will be in two parts. The first part will be an intersectional discussion of the politics and history of VJing as an art practice and its position in electronic dance music culture. The second part will be skill building using a camera, computer and Resolume software.
Led by Magdalena Olszanowski, the workshop will go through the various steps and methods to create original content: find pre-existing footage, make VJ clips, use the features to VJ independently, explain how to make responsive work to collaborate with musicians and how to integrate other software such as Processing, Pure Data, Adobe Premiere and others. This will include tips and tactics on how to combine various aesthetics (such as geometricresponsive clips, 1960s avant-garde, rhythmic textural, narrative-based, bricolage, etc.), streamline a workflow and detail what types of gear can be useful.
During this second portion, discussions will be intertwined with hands-on production and troubleshooting based on participant needs and their own skills to provide a feedback loop of skill sharing.
Participants must have an external drive and will go home with samples of work. Some experience with visual media is required but not necessary. Participants can bring moving image footage to experiment with but this is not necessary.
This event takes place in English.
The workshop is sold out. (Limited capacity)
