Uwe Schmidt (Atom™) joins forces with Burnt Friedmann to present their latest jazz infused electronics album Lollopy Dripper, as Flanger, a project that runs back 16 years and makes its live, world premiere in Barcelona. Described as both organic and extremely complex, their vision of music goes beyond genres and formulas to approach a sense of exploration rarely witnessed in contemporary music.

The sheer audacity and number of projects between Uwe Schmidt and Bernd Friedmann is startling. They are each a powerhouse of creation with sprawling discographies crossing a multitude of styles and genres. Their compatible attributes track across numerous solo and collaborative releases: syncopated rhythms, swing, jazz licks and modes, tremendous musicianship, and meticulous production values. But together, it’s difficult to ascertain where one man starts and the other leaves off. Maybe in their mingle Schmidt gets credit for a wry turn of funk or melody, and perhaps it’s Friedmann’s personality reverberating in certain (poly)rhythmic or acoustic flourishes.
It’s been 10 years since they last met as the jazz-powered Flanger, and 17 since their first collaboration in 1999. Their methodology remains virtually the same: meet in one or the other’s studio for a concentrated amount of time, haul out the keys and the drums, bring in a session player or two, and through the magic of their studio interventions create a future leaning jazz electronic hybrid of exceptional refinement and warmth.
Lollopy Dripper, their fifth and latest album, became an instant favourite for all the programmers of the festival upon its release last October – and MUTEK is pleased to present the North American premiere of Flanger live. If, as Louis Armstrong said, “Jazz is music that's never played the same way once,” this is not to be missed.
