Freida Abtan (CA)

This multi-disciplined artist and composer from Montreal (but currently based in Rhode Island) magically brings together music concrète with more contemporary sounds and a modern experimental aesthetic. Inspired by dreams and her fascination for imaginary spaces and abstract atmospheres, Freida Abtan composes extraordinary ethereal soundscapes built around successive layers of digitally transformed samples that weave in and out of each other. Her blossoming reputation and flamboyant nature led to an invitation to create visual shows for and collaborate with legendary British outfit Nurse With Wound. She has showcased her idiosyncratic visual and musical approach with performances across North America and most recently Turkey.

Conjuring the very real magic in the manipulation of sound, Freida Abtan teases out the hidden intricacies and morphologies made possible through digital processing and layering: the inaudible suddenly rises to the surface and the sound object completely transforms. Combined with samples and manipulations of her own voice, pieces move between abstraction and melodic structures. Her visual works similarly explore constantly transforming textural imagery, colour and form, as well as make aesthetic and conceptual links with the music.

A multidisciplinary artist, composer and academic with a background in computer science, fine art and electroacoustics, Abtan’s first album, “Subtle Movements” was released by Steven Stapleton’s United Dairies label in 2007. Working in the same phantasmagorical realm, she has forged a rich relationship with Nurse with Wound; creating visual shows, appearing on several albums, lending vocals, and with the band, live on numerous occasions. Her work in progress, “The Structure of Skin”, combines material from her second album, “The Hands of the Dancer/The Temple of the Dreamer” with evolving abstractions of geometric forms made from bones and cellular structures, evoking sensations of the sacred and rituals of transformation.
