Ensemble (archive) (FR)
Olivier Alary created Ensemble in 1998. It is a musical project which combines avant-garde aesthetics / production systems with the harmonies of pop music. The music of Ensemble, inspired by such things as static, weather, life, architecture, instability, uncertainty, love and limits, is a mixture of equipment misuse and emotion. Researching the fragile nature of technology, Ensemble exploits the human characteristics of failure and irregularity of the equipment by pushing devices to their limits. In his own words, 'I like misusing digital equipment, such as computer hardware and software. By pushing digital media too far I can create unexpected events and sublime accidents that can be used within the composition itself'.The first album 'Sketch Proposals' described as 'explorative pop music', was released in 2000 on Rephlex Records. Ensemble has also remixed Bjørk, Piano Magic and released several tracks on multiple labels (Sub-Rosa, Morr Music, One little Indian) and is actively involved in the fields of mixed media / installation Art producing several projects in Europe throughout 1999-2001.Currently (Spring 2002) Ensemble is producing a new album, another remix for Bjørk, as well as working on an interactive sound installation incorporating algorithmic computer programming.
