Ilpo Väisänen (FI)

One half of seminal Finnish artists Pan Sonic, Ilpo Väisänen is responsible for a large part of the sonorous 'moods'-abyssal drones and granular filters-that are the signature of the duo. Ilpo Väisänen is also, in his own right, a resister of the times in that in order to generate his sounds and soundscapes he rarely uses more than the simplest of devices: analog keyboards and other oscillators he's fabricated himself. In an age of digital ubiquities, his economy of means and anachronistic aura almost constitutes a challenge, indeed a provocation. One discovers this postulate within the solo discs that Väisänen has issued over the last four years. The sonic adventurer and globe-trotter extraordinaire (he divides his time between his city of Turku and the sunny skies of Barcelona), Ilpo's world permanently fluctuates between hot and cold; composed of creaks, whistles, strange noises and rhythmic improbabilities, it's a world oftentimes futuristic, yet prehistoric. We would not dare miss the passages from this expert marked by low frequencies, but also high fidelity.Live visuals by Philipp Geist - www.videogeist.de
