Operating out of San Francisco since the mid 90’s, Bay Area innovator and all-round anomaly Marc Barrite records under the guise of Dave Aju. Barrite has been storming clubs across the US and beyond with his intense and increasingly in-demand DJ/Live sets, earning serious recognition along the way. Aju has released his unique brand of jazz-tinged experimental house on Context, as well as many EPs through Paris’s Circus Company. Aju’s two LPs point to his unorthodox approach to sonic production: 2008’s Open Wide is comprised of sounds from the producer’s own mouth, while all tracks on his just released Heirlooms sample records and instruments he inherited from his late father. A MUTEK favourite, Aju arrives at this year's edition ready to premiere a brand-new live set based on his sophomore album.

Smooth, deep, and brimming with funk, the leftfield house music of San Francisco’s Dave Aju is designed to get feet moving. Boiling down a broad range of styles that takes him from the funkadelics of Bernie Worrell through the fusion jazz of Herbie Hancock to the aloof disco of Arthur Russell to the sampledelic Steinski, an Aju record often doubles as history lesson in American groove. But Aju also has personality to spare and a soulful, blunt voice as well, making him that rare producer whose distinctive sound is instantly recognizable the second he opens his mouth. A fan favourite and highlight discovery from MUTEK 2008, Aju has come a long way in the past two years. The release of his debut album “Open Wide”, composed completely of mouth samples, was considered by many one of the most impressive full-lengths of 2008. This year, Aju returns to MUTEK, ready to reveal the next chapter of his critically acclaimed and young career.
