A multi-instrumentalist who came into electronic music with over a decade’s worth of classical training, Montréal fixture and MUTEK repeat offender Jeremy Petrus (alias Mossa) found his production groove in the ‘90s when he began refurbishing scraps of minimal techno, jazz, latin and electro into rarely symmetrical, full-bodied, loopy sculptures. His eclectic discography of sample-heavy house compositions combines the lascivious with the ludicrous, enamouring connoisseurs with its colourful flourishes, face-lifted beats and flirty textures. The last decade saw Mossa maintain an insane production schedule: he notably shared releases and remixes on elite labels such as Seattle’s Orac, France’s Circus Company, Canada’s Cynosure and his own forward-thinking imprint/collective, Complot. His tracks have been checked and mixed by the likes of Death in Vegas and Akufen, and remixed by Swayzak, John Tejada and San Proper. After a notable hiatus (save for his House Unlimited events), this former player in the city’s micro-house scene returns in high spirits for an exclusive live EM15 affair, dead set on keeping the Savoy above the techno fray with racy rhythmic kicks from his upcoming album.
MTELUS - Savoy
Informed by a decade of classical training and electronic-music culture, Montrealer Jeremy Petrus has produced two albums and over a dozen singles’ worth of quirky, propulsive sample-heavy house that draws influence from jazz, funk, latin, electro and beyond. His tracks have been checked and mixed by artists as diverse as Death in Vegas to Akufen, and have been remixed by John Tejada, Ark, and Cabanne. Since 2002, he’s appeared on labels such as Orac, Mo’s Ferry, Cynosure, Circus Company and his own Complot Recordings. Mossa is a MUTEK repeat offender, and this fourth appearance will see him command the intimate, sweaty Savoy Room at Metropolis, where he’ll unleash new material from his latest album, « Festine », which boasts contributions from Mike Shannon, Dave Aju, Pezzner and Matias Kaden.
First and foremost a trained musician, Mossa’s classical training comes to the fore in his electronic productions. After DJing for a number of years Mossa, one Jeremy Petrus ventured into producing, melding disparate styles such as minimal techno, house, chopped beats and his passion for jazz with supreme technique to create an eclectic and impressive body of work. Mossa has donated tracks to a number of renowned labels including, Orac, Cynosure and Circus Company which released his acclaimed debut long player Some Eat it Raw (2006), an album that injected a sense of fun into an all too often grey and cold genre. Mossa also releases on the label he founded and now manages, Complot, a forward-thinking label/collective which includes some of Montreal’s most in-demand producers on its diverse roster. This year, Mossa has prepared a unique performance featuring the accompaniment of Thierry Arsenault. Arsenault, a multi-disciplinary drummer, is one of the founding members of Shtreiml and had preformed with numerous acclaimed musicians such as Bernard Primeau and Sylvie Desgroseillers. Thierry is now a known entity in montreal after marquee appearances at Montreal's International Festival of Jazz, the African Nights festival, and Musique Multi Montréal.
