WE ARE VERY SORRY TO ANNOUNCE THAT DUE TO ILLNESS, MIKA VAINIO WILL BE UNABLE TO PERFORM AT MUTEK. Pioneering Finnish musician and producer Mika Vainio has stood at the experimental forefront of contemporary electronic music for over two decades, pushing the boundaries of techno and noise with his avant garde ethos. As one half of industrial minimalists Pan Sonic with Ilpo Väisänen for 15 years, and solo (under his own name or Ø) or in collaboration with the likes of Mego’s Peter Rehberg, Keiji Haino, Charlemagne Palestine, Christian Fennesz, Stephen O’Malley, cellist Arne Deforce and other artists bent on challenging all expectations, Vainio has remained entrenched in the evocative and the emotional. Whether on drums and electronics in Finland’s early noise and industrial scene or plunging deep into ultra minimal deep listening projects for Sähkö Recordings, Vainio constructs his own swerving analog symphony out of distortion and electric cracks, field recordings and acoustic samples, veering into beat driven techno, as on his 2013 album Kilo (on Blast First Petite), dissonant ambient territory, as on 2012’s Magnetite (on Touch), or sound installation art on his 2009 Raster Noton album, Time Examined. His return to MUTEK – after his 2011 solo appearance – marks the merging of his signature abstract drones and industrial rhythmic textures.
