Abstract geometric shapes surge from the screen, layered over found film footage, original video and stylized geographies of terrestrial and celestial bodies as Diagraf constructs mesmerizing visual narratives deeply linked to music. His visual style combines minimalist graphic elements and complex evolutive particles systems with emotive cinematic content.

Keenly tuned in to the sounds of the musicians and producers he works alongside, Diagraf often creates all new content inspired by their music, calling himself a reverse filmmaker as he edits his images live while the musical performance unfolds. As well as launching his Unreal Dwelling Studio in 2009 for his various projects, Trudeau also produces music and video with audiovisual performance group Orbital Mechanics, honing his craft with the latest tech and increasingly working with generative elements and immersive content to develop a visual language that crosses sensory boundaries. At home in dome, multiscreen and all manner of performative contexts, Diagraf has intertwined his images with the music of Ricardo Villalobos, Max Cooper, Voices From the Lake, Pheek, The Field and more. A mainstay of MUTEK’s visual universe, he fills the Métropolis this year with his visions for sets by DASHA RUSH and FUNCTION.

MÉTROPOLIS 2
MUTEK 2014, montreal

Métropolis 31/05/2014

Abstract geometric shapes surge from the screen, layered over found film footage and stylized mountains, forests and stars as Montreal VJ, DJ, designer and filmmaker Patrick Trudeau, aka Diagraf, takes us on a mesmerizing journey deeply linked to music. Keenly tuned in to the sounds of the musicians and producers he works alongside, Diagraf often creates all new content inspired by their music, calling himself a reverse filmmaker as he edits his images live as the “soundtrack” plays. As well as launching his Unreal Dwelling Studio in 2009 for his various projects, Trudeau also produces music and video with audiovisual performance group Orbital Mechanics, honing his craft with the latest tech and increasingly working with generative elements and immersive content to create a synesthetic visual language. Most recently, he has performed with the Montréal Symphony Orchestra at the acoustically phenomenal Maison Symphonique, played Seattle’s Decibel festival, MUTEK MX, MUTEK_IMG (with ITAL), and outdoor winter electronic event Igloofest, while in the past two years at MUTEK he’s added visuals for live sets by Jacques Green, Max Cooper, Voices From the Lake, Pheek, The Field and more. Performing live at NOCTURNE MUTEK 3 and MÉTROPOLIS 2
