Ryoichi Kurokawa (JP)

Nocturne 3
MUTEK 2013, montreal

Red Bull Music Academy Stage [SAT] Society for Arts and Technology 01/06/2013

Japanese artist, Ryoichi Kurokawa produces timeless audiovisual compositions that take on multiple forms, whether video, multi-screen installations, recordings or live performances. Kurokawa approaches image and sound as one entity, rather than separately. He uses what he calls an ‘audiovisual organ’ to compose spatial-time sculptures with analog or digitally generated materials and field recorded sources. His groundbreaking works have been showcased more than once at MUTEK, notably in 2012 as part of CineChamber, presented by Recombinant Media Labs. In 2010, he was awarded the Golden Nica at Prix Ars Electronica in the Digital Music and Sound Art category.

Panorama 1: CineChamber Classics (65 min)
MUTEK 2012, montreal

Cinéma Excentris 03/06/2012

Ryoichi Kurokawa is a true poet of the transformative cinema, lyrically transfiguring the analogic representations of perceived nature into digital streams of vertiginous imagery & emotion. The architecturally crafted precision of his sensitively synched fragmentary images placed side by side on our retina, tends to displace the persistence of blurred memory under the effect of boundless luminosity.

Parallel Head

Two seminal Kurokawa projects from the 2000's get the full panoramic treatment with the rapid fire PARALLEL HEAD & CM:AV _C. Here Ryoichi propagates his tidal waves of elastic tempo's which are re-assembled in a sudden and surprising dramaturgy of electrochemical sub-narrative temporalities.
