Modeselektor (DE)

With their stunning live performances and genre-mashing approach to techno composition, Modeselektor’s Gernot Bronsert and Sebastian Szary have earned themselves an international reputation among music fans and high-profile peers alike. Radiohead’s Thom Yorke was one of their first vocal supporters, and listening to 2005’s Hello Mom! and 2007’s Happy Birthday!, it’s not hard to see why. Modeselektor gleefully disregard the rulebook, incorporating heavy doses of dancehall, hip-hop, jacking techno, IDM, and ambient onto corrosive templates that bring to mind French acts like Justice as well as more highbrow British stalwarts like Autechre. Modeselektor do it all, and they do it extremely well.

Nocturne 2: Modeselektion
MUTEK 2011, montreal

Métropolis 03/06/2011

Nearly ten years into a highly acclaimed career, Modeselektor’s Gernot Bronsert and Sebastian Szary are on top of the world. Their first two albums on Ellen Allien’s Bpitch Control – 2005’s Hello Mom! and 2007’s Happy Birthday! – quickly turned them into the label’s most popular act. Their work as Moderat (with longtime friend Apparat) has spread their ever-growing fan base well beyond electronic music enclaves. A stellar live act on any front, the duo is now considered one of the most reliable draws on any stage they grace. In 2009, they launched their own label, Monkeytown Records. Now in its third year, the imprint has become home to Modeselektor’s prolific run of Modeselektion mixes, as well as a launching pad for younger acts such as Siriusmo. Firmly established as ambassadors of throwing out the genre rulebook, the duo plays fast and deadly with the most convulsive frequencies from a cross-section of electro, techno, hip-hop, and indie-rock. This year, Modeselektor arrive in Montreal for a rare North American showcase of their Modeselektion series. Helming the night as DJs, they’ve brought Monkeytown Records act Siriusmo and mysterious Hardwax duo Anstam along for the ride.
