Mike Shannon

Mike Shannon (CA)

One of the first Canadian producers to set up shop in Berlin’s electronic epicentre, Kitchener-raised Mike Shannon has been a funky force to be reckoned with, both at home and abroad for over 15 years. His DJ career took off along the Detroit-Toronto axis, where he devised a signature that straddles quivering techno, hypnotic jazz and buttery deep house – a sweeping musical vision that remains integral to his sound. Shannon quickly added the qualifiers 'producer' and 'label owner' to his resumé upon moving to Montréal in the late nineties; he contributed to the homegrown minimal techno explosion by launching record label Cynosure and the more experimental Revolve Recordings (the latter with Jeff Milligan). As head A&R for the esteemed Cynosure, he’s helped boost the profile of like-minded artists such as Deadbeat, Akufen and Ernesto Ferreyra. He has released three albums to date on some of techno’s most notable imprints (Plus 8, Force Inc, ~scape), while continuing to blur tonal lines with his sultry, downtempo jazz trio Blue Fields (with Takeshi Nishimoto and Fadila) and an upcoming live act with German house pal DeWalta. After celebrating Cynosure’s 10th anniversary at MUTEK five years ago, Shannon returns with a new live set, to do what he does best: transcend techno clichés.

Any historian who takes it upon themselves to pen the tale of Canadian electronic in the years to come will most certainly find the name Mike Shannon figures early and often in it’s telling. From his humble beginnings in the sleepy suburban town of Kitchener Ontario, the last 15 years have seen him become an internationally lauded producer with albums on 3 of the industry’s most respected labels (Plus 8, Force Inc, ~Scape), as well as a steady stream of consistently charted singles and remixes.

A true “DJ’s DJ”, he has won legions of fans and the respect of his peers alike for his deep crates and lightning fast mixing skills. And while some may suggest he has gravitated towards smoother, deeper selections as the years go by, those in the know will tell you he has few equals when it comes to whipping dance floors into a relentless techno frenzy should you catch him on a night with that mischievous twinkle in his eye.

As a live performer Mike has explored a wide range of musical directions, from the ambient jazz leanings of his Blue Fields project alongside a rotating cast of musicians and vocalists, as well as the collaborative techno project Dewalta and Shannon alongside David Koch, which sees the two flex there creative muscle using an extensive rig of modular synthesizers and drum machines to wild dance floor destroying effect.

Yet beyond all of this, perhaps his greatest achievement has been his unfailing support of the music and people he loves. As head A&R and damn near everything else of Cynosure, Haunt, and formerly Revolver Recordings for over 10 years, Mike has shown an uncanny ability to select and release tracks which have become go-to fixtures in the sets of the industry’s best DJs, as well as introducing the world to the work of some of his nearest and dearest before anyone knew their names (Akufen, Deadbeat, Ernesto Ferrerya). Far from pursuing the next one hit wonder or sound of the season, his steadfast curatorial vision and passion for the music have earned him the trust of discerning music connoisseurs the world over.

In the 10 years since Mike Shannon started making a name for himself on the international electronic music scene as a DJ, producer and label owner, he has proven that it’s not just his music that makes him such a valuable asset, but his total dedication to the cause.

Shannon’s career began through DJing and clubbing in the Detroit-Toronto axis, and in 1999 this led to the formation of his own label Cynosure. A couple of years later, he teamed up with Jeff Milligan on the more experimental Revolver Canada imprint. Both labels have since developed into highly respected and trusted sources, subsequently raising the profile of Canada’s electronic music scene with producers such as Akufen and Deadbeat. Alongside his many singles, he has released three albums to date on some of techno’s most notable labels: 2002’s Slight of Hand (Force Inc.), 2005’s Possible Conclusions to Stories That Never End (~scape), and 2008’s Memory Tree (Plus 8).

Nowadays a resident of Berlin, this year Mike Shannon returns to Montreal to celebrate Cynosure’s 10th anniversary alongside the festival that helped propel him to international notoriety.
