Kode 9 (UK)

The mastermind behind the Hyperdub label, Kode 9 (aka Steve Goodman) is one of the most forward thinking minds in dubstep. As an artist, he has issued two critically acclaimed albums with MC The Spaceape, the 2006 debut Memories of the Future, and 2011’s equally impressive, more politically charged Black Sun. As curator for Hyperdub, he’s launched a string of seminal careers for acts such as Ikonika, Zomby, Darkstar, and the South London enigma Burial. Kode 9 has also explored the brave new world of sinister sub-bass through academia, teaching at the University of East London and publishing a book about the military applications of sound.  MUTEK’s 2007 edition provided Goodman with one of his first major showcases in North America, and his 2009 follow-up performances proved festival favourites. This year, Kode 9 returns to MUTEK for one of his hotly anticipated DJ sets, which are often seen as barometers for the future of bass music itself.

A quintessential ambassador to the explosive UK dubstep scene, London’s Kode9 has done more to propel the notoriety and influence of the genre than any other producer currently at work. As an artist he has issued numerous groundbreaking singles on Aphex Twin’s Rephlex imprint, classic dubstep outlets like Tempa, and his very own Hyperdub label, the home of his critically acclaimed 2006 debut album with The Spaceape, Memories of the Future. As the founder of Hyperdub, he has cultivated a roster that includes the infamous Burial.
