Alva Noto (DE)
Carsten Nicolai enjoys one of the most respected reputations in avant-garde laptop music, and rightfully so, as he has established a highly notable presence in the multimedia experimentation of the late 20th and early 21st century.
Bringing an academic understanding of architecture and landscape to the development of soundscapes, Nicolai arrived in Berlin in the early 90s, where he began releasing his recordings on his own Noton - Archiv Für Ton Und Nichtton label. After Nicolai merged his label with Olaf Bender’s Rastermusic (1999), the maturation of his sound and his design work converged to create an aesthetic that set the tone for computer-based minimalism in the decade to follow.
Apart from his numerous solo works as Alva Noto, Nicolai has also collaborated with Ryoji Ikeda , Ryuichi Sakamoto , Michael Nyman , Scanner , Frank Bretschneider , Olaf Bender , and others.
