Savan (CO)

Bogotá-based producer Miguel Navas, better known by his Savan moniker, is considered a key exponent of Colombia’s electronic music scene. His productions tap into minimal techno, deep house and a rich tapestry of traditional Colombian rhythms in what could be filed under the country’s booming “electro cumbia” current. Since escaping the punk rock limelight in the early nineties, this electroacoustic composer has developed a signature, Latin percussion-strong sound, which he eagerly unpacks and reassembles one thump at a time during live performances. His most recent work, the techno-cumbia-tinged Transmilenio, finds Navas protesting social injustices through sound, namely by incorporating audio testimonials from indigenous communities affected by multinational mining into the mix. Since first appearing on Swiss DJ Fragment’s minimal techno label Bruchstuecke’s Potlatch EP (2002), Navas has represented his country at Red Bull Music Academy (2004), released a handful of solo works and performed at Mexico’s Cervantino Festival for the 2010 Bicentenario, at MUTEK’s request.
