For the 2012 edition, Wagon Repair label co-founder Mathew Jonson teams up with Swedish production duo Minilogue to present a set of largely improvised and winding techno. Vancouver’s Mathew Jonson has been at the forefront of the Canadian scene for well over a decade with his moody, exquisitely layered compositions that run the rhythmic gamut. Jonson has always thrived on improvisation and performing with others in live settings, whether with the Modern Deep Left Quartet (which MUTEK welcomed in 2009), the live project Cobblestone Jazz (MUTEK 2007, 2003) or through collaborations with artists such as Dandy Jack (MUTEK 2009). Meanwhile, Minilogue’s Sebastian Mullaert and Marcus Henriksson have been spreading their electronic gospel for just as long, covering impressive sonic ground with their elegantly minimal, hypnotic compositions. Their 2008 debut album, the expansive, meditative two-disc set Animals, brought their ethereal tech-house and deep ambient to greater acclaim, as did their inaugural North American live set at MUTEK in 2010.
