Magnanime (CA)

As a Montreal-bred musician, Sara Magnan, a.k.a. Magnanime, takes inspiration from the people, places, and happenings she experiences in her cosmopolitan setting. Her music is a constant reinvention and metamorphosis of her deep musical spring that grazes her personal essence, the socio-political and environmental influences, and manifests into a dance music experience that seeks to exchange with the audience. With swing, contradiction and constant groove roofing her house, she is a soul-mama that takes the dancefloor on a psychedelic journey.

As a female pioneer in the Montreal experimental techno house scene, in 2015 she released her first 12” EP Don’t Wait For Me on the Chicago-based label Siteholder records with remixes from Akufen and Brian Ffar. She since has been part of releases such as The Fable, a double-vinyl compilation on Klangscheiben, and she was also part of the Horror Inc Remixed compilation with Brandt Brauer Frick , Dimbiman and Stephen Beaupré on Perlon 106.

An auteur in her own right, Sara Magnan, aka Magnanime, creates a techno-house hybrid rife with experimental nuances, embracing mistakes of technology and recycling odd noises into her perpetually evolving, beat driven repertoire. Her music takes inspiration from her cosmopolitan experience, in constant reinvention and metamorphosis and not without a sociopolitical side and authenticities – during her 2012 MUTEK performance, she let loose an unhinged techno pow-wow in honour of First Nations people and an outdoor show supporting Montréal’s Occupy movement.

The past year has been major for Magnan, seeing the official release of her 12” EP Don’t Wait for Me on Chicago label Siteholder – two original tracks of dynamic tech rhythms and processed vocals on the far edge of house, plus a remix by Akufen. Other recent tracks exude slow-burning intrigue and warped tape loop vocals, sustained synth riffs, staccato beats and an evocative sample arsenal.

Live, Magnanime’s forward thinking production process and enthusiasm for listener’s reactions shines, aware of her environment she manifests a dance music experience that is a kind of exchange with the audience. She comes to MUTEK with a new live set of exuberant grooves - and meanings, to keep us guessing.

EXPÉRIENCE 2
MUTEK 2014, montreal

Esplanade de la Place des Arts 30/05/2014

The music of Montréal producer Sara Magnan, a.k.a. Magnanime, forges auteur-like links between tech-house, IDM and musique concrète, held together by a forward-thinking production process and enthusiasm for listener’s reactions. Magnan developed her electroacoustic techniques in part while studying at Recording Arts Canada and in technical direction in the contemporary dance world. The idea of sonic movement percolates through her music and her experimental video work, as does a search for authentic expression and intellectual depth, yet her music is not without a sense of humour – she incorporates mistakes and recycles odd noises into her perpetually evolving, beat-driven repertoire. Political currents also pervade -- including during her 2012 MUTEK performance, an unhinged techno pow-wow in honour of First Nations people, and more explicitly, an outdoor show supporting Montréal’s Occupy movement. Along with live sets, her music features on deep house and ambient label CCCLTD’s Iceberg III compilation with Maxime Tanguay, label founder Michel Plamondon, Sapin, Vincent Lemieux and Aun, as well as in the mixtura.org series.
