Prison Garde (CA)

A commanding, tattoo-covered barber by day, and a distinguished, hardware-literate beatmaker by night, Vaughn Robert Squire has never been one to fit the mold (or stick to a single moniker). A veteran of the Canadian electronic music scene with a nearly two-decade strong track record of cross-genre tastemaking, this restless Halifax native pioneered Montréal’s bass music scene in the mid-to-late-noughties with his monthly renegade Turbo Crunk nights, bringing together the city’s distortion-loving community, while also fostering a new generation of talented up-and-comers (Lunice, Jacques Greene, Ango). Having released imaginative, off-the-wall, hip hop-ish cuts as Sixtoo on Ninja Tune, this man of many creative outlets (also known as Speakerbruiser Rob, one half of Megasoid and one-third of Nouveau Palais) has lately been throwing down a genre-busting, tempo-swapping, powerhouse preparation of funk, footwork, techno, and old school house as Prison Garde. A 2014 RBMA Bass Camp Montréal mentor with a forthcoming release on Vancouver imprint ASL Singles Club, and a cassette for 100% Silk, Squire returns to EM15 with a live set of what he's calling "hardware house".
