Nicolas Jaar presents From Scratch (CL/US)

Born and raised in New York City and in Santiago, Chile, Nicolas Jaar grew up exposed to a world of contemporary art and music through his father, artist Alfredo Jaar. Precociously, Nicolas released his first music on Wolf + Lamb at the age of 17, before signing with Circus Company, and then founding his own labels, Clown & Sunset and most recently, the Other People imprint. The range of his talent and depth of his personality broke through on the dreamy, melancholic, yet danceable, Space Is Only Noise in 2011, an album that brought crossover success with its new wave and classical piano grooves. Jaar’s 2012 BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix and his recorded and live collaboration with multi-instrumentalist Dave Harrington as Darkside, have significantly boosted his name among rock and pop scenes. In 2012, Jaar played an hours-long set at MoMA, the first of his extended "From Scratch" explorations, before unfurling another unique version, at the 2013 Communikey Festival at the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art. After three MUTEK Montréal appearances since 2009 and others in Chile and Spain, each exhibiting a distinct flavour of their own, Jaar continues to look to the festival as an incubator for his unconventional musical notions, a place where he can improvise and experiment with new ideas and long-form music to his heart’s content. He will be joined throughout the night by Will Epstein, Sasha Spielberg, Lizzie Feidelson, Vance Galloway and the visual wizardry of Tarik Barri. This year, EM15 gives Jaar carte-blanche for a new incarnation of “From Scratch,” which will also act as the festival’s epic and enthralling Sunday night closer.

Tarik Barri
Dutch audiovisual artist Tarik Barri, also an expert improvisor but with visuals, joins Jaar for the duration of From Scratch. He started programming at the age of seven and started producing electronic music when he was 16. After studies in biological psychology and music and technology he turned to creating and developing his own software and was able to build a unique and personal audiovisual instrument. With it he explores new aesthetic possibilities combining image and sound in his own performances, installations, videos and in collaboration with other musicians like Atoms for Peace and Monolake.
