A young English musician of Czech origin, currently residing in Berlin, Emika is carving out a place as the golden girl of Europe’s electronic underground. She has collaborated with DJ Pete, a pioneer of Berlin’s techno circuit, has received raves from Thom Yorke, and is the mastermind behind “Pretend”, a track that turned into a hit rearrangement on Brand Brauer Frick’s record, Mr. Machine. A trained sound designer, she produces, writes, sings, plays piano and manipulates synths and sequencers, among other ambidextrous musical talents. Her eponymous debut was released in 2011 on Ninja Tune, which also distributed many of her EPs and will release her forthcoming sophomore record, Dva, later this June. A child of dubstep (and torch song), she takes a root sound known for its aggro, muscular tendencies, and twists its parts into songs. While Emika will be performing solo at her MUTEK debut, she has been conceiving of her live performances in various formats, among them a string quartet version of the new material.
