Nocturne 4
MUTEK 2013, montreal

Metropolis 02/06/2013

Ohio-born, Berlin-based John Roberts, cooks up deep house that’s unmistakably leftfield – and emotionally delicate. That’s the distinct impression left after listening to all five of his EPs as well as his album Glass Eights, released on Dial. Tailor-made to move the body, Roberts’ melodies and multifarious textures are also an invitation to deeper reflection. His forthcoming sophomore album, Fences, finds him furthering his sound with a collage of piano, violin, guitar, cello and answering machine cassettes, all manipulated with great sensitivity to feeling and groove. The resulting sonic fresco is at once rich and complex, an impressively cohesive tableau that’s in keeping with the orchestral odyssey initiated on Glass Eights. Increasingly known for his dynamic live sets, John Roberts graces the MUTEK stage for the first time, this year.
