Pinch (UK)

Bristol producer/DJ/label honcho Rob Ellis, best known as Pinch, was instrumental in bringing early dubstep and its manifold chest-rattling permutations to his hometown (christened “dubstep’s second city” thanks largely to his efforts) in 2004 via his Subloaded night, inspired by London’s formative FWD» parties. Rooted in the meditative, menacing, risk-prone end of dubstep, this uncompromising artist has contributed to the post-drum ‘n’ bass landscape in more ways than one. His forward-thinking Tectonic imprint, established in 2005, has championed a broad palette of headstrong rhythms in the 140 BPM range, shining an early career spotlight on underground innovators such as Digital Mystikz, Addison Groove, Flying Lotus and Loefah. Launched in 2013, his newest vinyl-only imprint, Cold Recordings, provides an outlet for darker, bass-driven mutations sitting somewhere along the techno/house continuum. As a producer, he’s released one of dubstep’s most seminal records, Underwater Dancehall (2007), and has contributed to the acclaimed catalogues of labels such as Planet Mu, Soul Jazz and Swamp 81. His collaborative work has proven just as likely to upend expectations, from his acclaimed 2011 LP with Shackleton, to his genre-bending pursuits with dub legend Adrian Sherwood (as Sherwood & Pinch). A big supporter of British soundsystem culture, his DJ sets run the gamut of influences, while providing listeners a thoughtful headspace. His live EM15 performance marks one of the artist’s rare appearances on North American soil.
