Xavier León (CA)

A 2011 Red Bull Music Academy alumnus, Montréal native Xavier León fashions one-size-fits-all, emotive bass music. Inspired by his Venezuelan roots and a bloodline bent for percussion-strong sounds, León has long chased after simultaneous sonic spoils: beat-driven ambient/noise (as Red Scare), collage-y experiments (as Growing Pains) and eerily soulful synths and glitches (as Sibian & Faun, a duo with childhood pal Milo Reinhardt) among them. Since releasing their debut EP, I’m Sorry (2011), on Glasgow’s thriving Numbers label, Sibian & Faun brought their slowed-down, haunted bass atmospherics to MUTEK in 2012. As for León’s solo output, which ranges from downtempo, wistful singer-songwriter material to leftfield juke, foreboding breaks and jazz-y, R&B-inflected wobbles, it’s all bound together by the infectious earnestness of a dyed-in-the-wool music lover. After releasing his genre-defying debut EP on local label Infinite Machine (2013), León promises a sweeping showcase of percussive styles explored in recent years, at EM15.
