Ricardo Villalobos & Max Loderbauer (DE)

Berlin-based DJs and composers Ricardo Villalobos and Max Loderbauer paired up on the double-album Re: ECM, in 2009, a long-term project that gave them carte-blanche to sample, loop and remix original recordings on the German jazz label ECM, long an influence on their own music. Re: ECM draws from the label’s 40 years of production, with a focus on the recent work of Christian Wollumrød, Alexander Knaifel and Arvo Pärt, while drawing from composers Paul Giger, Louis Sclavis, John Abercrombie and Bennie Maupin. Making a departure from club-oriented experimental techno, including Loderbauer’s synth work with the Moritz Von Oswald Trio, the duo created their own lavish, abstract “sound-structures” for the project, using modular synthesizers to connect disparate musical genres and merging improvisational electronic music with the essence of masterful electroacoustic compositions and shades of minimal techno. Part of Villalobos and Loderbauer’s ongoing personal explorations of avant-garde electronic music with an improv jazz spontaneity, Re: ECM makes its North America premier at EM15.
