Alain Lefebvre & Sonya Stefan (CA)

Montréal artists Alain Lefebvre and Sonya Stefan have worked together for over a year as Annuaire, an audio-visual project that uses amplified objects, stereo field recordings and electronic devices to create an atmosphere both otherworldly and concrete – music and video directly interact via remote signal to embrace short circuits, feedback and distortion. Experimental musician Lefebvre searches out sounds through experimentation with analogue instruments and other machines, while artist and dancer Stefan produces images by reworking video signals and the everyday technology of DVD players, cell phones and projectors. Lefebvre has made improvisational noise music as a solo artist since 2011, going beyond the intended uses and capabilities of instruments and machines to draw out their musical and non-musical sounds. He has curated the concert series “We are the Drugs” and “24gauche” and released albums on experimental band K.A.N.T. N.A.G.A.N.O.’s Encodages de l’Oubli label and Montréal’s Kohlenstoff Records. Stefan has screened her dance-informed films at Montreal’s Festival du Nouveau Cinéma, Les Rendez-Vous du Cinéma Québécois, France’s Festival ONFI, and international video festivals. She co-founded visual art collective Groop Index, is in residence at Circuit Est creation centre, and is completing her first full-length fiction film, “Living Room Dances.”
