PEA: Projet Électro-Acrylique (CA)

As Projet Électro-Acrylique, Montréal musician, producer and sound designer Frederic Laurier and multi-disciplinary, Montréal-based artist Alec create a form of audio-visual art outside the electronic norm, yet replete with recognizable techno melodies and rhythms. In live performance, Alec paints in vivid abstract strokes while Laurier harnesses the sound of his brushes, captured via contact microphones on the canvas, to craft an expertly constructed array of altered notes and arresting beats. In feedback-loop style, the music affects the way Alec paints. For almost 20 years, Laurier has been as at home DJing at top Montréal clubs as he is tweaking new sounds behind the console. As Pfreud, he drops classic electro-house and disco touches into his avant-garde, down-tempo techno, techniques that brought acclaim for his 2001, A Yachting Love Story (on Trigger Records), and propelled him into new musical zones. Alec studied at Arts Décoratifs de Genève and has worked steadily as a graphic artist and in industrial design; all the while he has immersed himself in painting and other visual art practices, finding inspiration in music, mechanics and machinery of all kinds.
