Intercity-Express & Synichi Yamamoto (JP)

Japanese experimental filmmaker, video artist and graphic artist Synichi Yamamoto teams up with ambient-techno musician and producer Tetsuji Ohno as Intercity Express, creating artwork through live performance. Ohno’s music is in constant interplay with Yamamoto’s dazzling, floor-to-ceiling visuals – sound is generated in real time by a video signal, and video altered by a sound signal. The performance oscillates between two polarities: an acoustic phase based on pixel reconstruction of films and digital maps; and an electric phase centred in geometric and generative design. The duo sonically and spatially deconstruct imagined landscapes, clicking and cutting at a rapid pace or gliding slowly through an environment of their own making. For over two decades, Yamamoto has created experimental film and video, presenting at Japan’s Image Forum Festival and The Netherlands’ World Wide Video Festival, among other Japanese and international screenings, and has worked steadily in advertising and television.
