Matthew Biederman & 4X (CA)

Transdisciplinary artist Matthew Biederman and sound artist 4X (composer, sound designer and musician Alain Thibault) dive deep into the physicality of sound and image perception in their latest project, Physical, a follow-up to their 2006 collaboration, PULSE. Created in 2013 and performed only a handful of times internationally, Physical comes to EM15 as a Montréal debut, a project that straddles club-inspired electronic music and electroacoustic experimentation. Visually, Montréal-based Biederman draws on his experience working with video and data systems for international exhibitions, such as the Lyon Bienniale, Sao Paulo’s FILE festival and Vancouver’s New Forms, and as artist-in-residence at several institutions, including the Experimental Television Centre at Binghamton University and CMU’s CREATE lab. His solo work and collaborations with the Signal-Sever!/SPEKTR!/SCATTER! Team emphasize his unrestrictive attitude towards using multiple media, from radio to painting, and his desire for his work to evoke emotional reaction. Thibault, co-founder and artistic director of Montréal’s Elektra festival, now in its 15th year, has performed his compositions internationally as a solo artist and with visual artist Yan Breuleux as duo PurForm. With Physical, both Thibault and Biederman seek to inundate the senses with “a cosmology” of image and sound as a way to raise awareness of the permeable, overlapping boundaries between what the eye and ear perceive – and what goes on in our heads as that occurs.
