German producer, DJ and label head Thomas Bäz’s entire artistic practice is rooted in an unadulterated love for “snippets of beats.” His conceptual approach to minimal techno is nevertheless imbued with sophisticated disco cues and an array of smooth, funky grooves. After initially dabbling in harder-edged techno, Bäz tapped into his discerning curatorial instincts to found Klangscheiben Records in 2004, a Thuringia-based label that walks a fine line between house and techno while keeping a spirit of experimentation very much alive. Indebted to peers such as Akufen and Pantytec, Demas’s own quirky sound design embraces oddly entrancing minimal architectures. He’s released on his own label and a slew of others, including Micromod Music and Doppelganger. Paris Fields, his latest EP of adventurous techno, finds the German producer reshaping recorded sounds from the Parisian underground with a flair for mini-funk.
