A Florida native who was always more drawn to an impressionistic template of global house than to the ubiquitous Miami bass that soundtracked his youth, Anthony Naples quickly dropped out of college and moved to New York in pursuit of a distinctly wistful sonic niche. Suffice it to say that his ascent has been no less than meteoric: his debut single Mad Disrespect launched NYC party institution Mister Saturday Night’s eponymous label and greatly piqued Four Tet’s curiosity. Over the course of several EPs for The Trilogy Tapes and the imprint of revered Glasgow record shop Rubadub, he’s demonstrated an innate ability to tell captivating stories through fuzzy, upbeat melodies and abstract bundles of strings, keys and plaintive percussion. In the lead up to Body Pill, his enjoyably melancholy, distortion drenched debut for Four Tet’s Text label, Naples also took it upon himself to start his own imprint, Proibito. Bright young things rarely follow through on a promise of such staggering talent, so do yourself a favour and see what all the slow burning, tempo shifting fuss is all about as he takes to the decks for his MUTEK debut.
