There’s an unmistakably cinematic feel to the chugging hip hop grooves, screeching guitar edits and loopy melodic narratives of Brussels’ Squeaky Lobster (one, Laurent Delforge). Whether steamed or boiled, Squeaky’s heady, chest pummelling bass is best served in mixtape form – bringing together the storied past, forward thinking present and far out future of a borderless rhythmic nation. A bassist for multiple rock and jazz projects over the years (including psych noise band South of No North), Delforge also performs off-the-beaten-path installations with visual collective (and MUTEK alumni) AntiVJ, as well as contemporary electroacoustic compositions under his own name. As Squeaky, his immersive samples, twisted melodies and skittering beats have thrice been preserved for EP prosperity via Belgian label Vlek. After years spent wooing European crowds, the rug cutting crustacean claws his way onto MUTEK’s shores, allowing patrons to crack a hard shell full of delicious Belgian breaks.
