Société des arts technologiques [SAT] - Satosphère
Inspired by the beauty of the natural environments he has been living and working in over the past few years from Europe to Indonesia, a sense of awe permeates Kawchuk's tapestry of bright melodies, mournful strings, delicate piano, serene ambience and brooding drone — as sublime and dangerous as the weather and environments that move him musically.
Jonathan Kawchuk grew up in Alberta, but following an internship at Greenhouse Studios in Iceland (under the tutelage of Valgeir Sigurðsson and Ben Frost) he went on to study Music Composition, Technology & Production at the Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts in the UK. In the years since, he has worked professionally as a soundtrack composer for feature documentaries and a sound designer for commercials. He was also studio assistant on recent albums for Nico Muhly and Ben Frost and an assistant sound technician for the Philip Glass Ensemble in London. His latest project North, was recorded over the space of two years at various locations in Canada, Norway, Iceland, the UK, Israel and Portugal. All of the tracks were played back and re-recorded in the forests of Jostedal National Park in Norway with the intention of capturing some of the resonance of the natural surroundings in the recording.
Performing live using two iPads against an artificial background of precisely controlled white light, Kawchuk delivers a set based around the material on North and brand new compositions.
