MUTEK 2017, montreal

Esplanade de la Place des Arts

With a judiciously restrained sound palette, delightfully awkward switches in time signature and thoughtful use of negative space, gonima twists glitchy chilled electronica with crystalline melodies and skittering, insectoid beats — the deceptively aloof exterior gives way to a strikingly warm and emotive core.

Adept on various tactile instruments, but drawn to drums while growing up in Pennsylvania, Magoni became enamoured with electronic beats and hardware, forming the improvisational dance music synth duo Square Wave, which privileged Casiotone keyboards and Gameboys. He moved to Montréal from Philadelphia in 2011 to study for a B.A. in Philosophy and Music Technology at McGill. A versatile musician, he also is also active in electronic duo N’Dorok who merge R&B vocals and UK garage in a formula that sits halfway between IDM and club music. As gonima however, he incorporates subtle use of electro-acoustic flourishes and generative elements while exploring themes of alienation and complacency.

The perfect soundtrack for late afternoons under the sun, gonima quite literally sets the stage outside on Friday, performing a live set of previously unheard material.
