Pelada (CA)

MUTEK 2017, montreal

Esplanade de la Place des Arts

Mashing up hardware-heavy acid, jacked Chicago house and bold, driving synths, Pelada’s sound is elevated by a punk spirit and pointed, shout-sung Spanish lyrics. Imminently danceable, this is culturally aware, urgently political body music.

Growing out of Montréal’s burgeoning after-hours scene, Rochman and Vargas as Pelada cut their teeth playing late night warehouse parties to diverse crowds after initially forming for an artist residency application in Colombia in 2014. On New Year’s Day 2016 they put out their first EP on New, their own vinyl and digital imprint specializing in releasing under-represented local electronic music. They followed this exactly a year later with an equally powerful and abrasive single, Córrale. Thematically they explore themes of power, control, surveillance and sexual politics, the powerful and stark lyrics repeated as angry mantras until attaining maximum emphasis. In between releases the duo toured extensively in Europe playing many shows and several festivals from Switzerland and Spain to Greece and Russia. Chris recently moved to Berlin and the duo have been collaborating remotely on new material since then, with Tobias also playing live in Montréal under his own name.

Synths, samplers and drum machines in tow, Pelada unleash their impassioned live show on the outdoor stage, among the Berlin-spirited sounds of Saturday's focus.
