Clap! Clap! (IT)

Nocturne 1
MUTEK 2018, montreal

Société des arts technologiques [SAT] - Espace SAT

A master of mixing samples and live instrumentation into a frenzy, Clap! Clap! doesn't stray far from the high-energy eclecticism of his moniker: Chicago footwork and bass mutations merge into West African and Latin Soca rhythms, hip hop and house grooves and ambient abstract narratives.

Crisci started out in music at the age of 13 as a singer and rapper before picking up the saxophone and later joining jazz-punk band Trio Cane. With Tuscan trio A Smile For Timbuctu, Crisci, musician Simone Brillarelli and graphic designer Jonathan Calugi decided to focus on analog melody, crafting installations and performances that immersed audiences in a friendly fusion of upbeat music and graphics, even drawing the attention of New York label kazoomzoom, who commissioned a children's album. Crisci waded into solo electronic production as Digi G'Alessio, diving into his love of African polyrhythms and rare field recordings to create a multitude of complex, feel-good dance tracks. Producing as Clap! Clap! since 2013, he expanded his heavy sampling into his own form of abstract storytelling, where global sounds, juke, house and hip-hop collide in attention-grabbing journeys toward the root of what it means to be human. His latest album, A Thousand Skies, sounds exactly like a culmination of Crisci's myriad musical research and collaborations, bringing together the inspiring styles of South African folk singer Bongeziwe Mabandla, Berlin-based Oy, Cape Town producer John Wizards and diverse instrumental contributors to tell the story of a young girl's journey through the stars.

Tours through Europe and Japan in the past year have culminated in Clap! Clap! recently bolstering his sound with a full band, harnessing new inspiration from the inventive experience. He comes to MUTEK with something new again, a solo live set that plays up positive vibes and tells its own exuberant, life-affirming story.
