Ambient analog composition blurs note by note into a skittering hi-hat beat and steady low-end in DJ Voilà's moody leftfield experiments in house—traveling leisurely from slow summer days into shadowy euphoric nights.
Bolstered by a community of harmoniously experimental artists in Montréal, Simon Chioini is known for creating a hybrid of new music compositions and genre fusing underground club sounds, with acoustic instrumental flourishes and synth waves layered in syncopated rhythms and unexpected distortions. As DJ Voilà, he leans deeper into upbeat house without losing the compositional depth or curiosity for sound, appropriately situated on west-coast tape label 1080p and the cosmic frontiers of Providence, Rhode Island's Noumenal Loom. Chioini's approach to electroacoustic compositions tiered in techno beats has honest roots, stemming from classical percussion and a self driven study of pioneering and outlier electronic music of the 90s and 00s followed by a degree in electroacoustic composition at the Conservatoire de musique de Montréal. Chioini co-founded and co-organizes independent music label and artist collective Acte with Gabriel Ledoux, Devon Hansen, Philippe Vandal and Kara-Lis Coverdale, and is involved in online radio platform n10.as Radio. He is also Acting Artistic Director for the concert society Codes d’accès, an organization that promotes emerging artists in new music and recently launched a web series of audiovisual performances and artist profiles.
Along with shows in Montréal and New York with fellow ACTE artists and in-situ concerts at Perte de signal, Eastern Bloc and other galleries and festivals such as Suoni per il Popolo, Chioini brings a new set of multi-rhythmic minimalism to MUTEK as DJ Voilà, taking us on a Sunday night ride in a showcase that wraps up the festival in an end-of-summer afterglow.
