Officially launched in 2001, the Creative Commons initiative was created as a means of expanding the definition of copyright by adding a number of permutations into the current definition of artistic property. So far, fifteen countries have adopted jurisdiction-specific licenses within the Creative Commons worldwide network, and the opportunity for digital distribution increases as license development discussions are presently taking place in 14 other countries. This panel will discuss the opportunities provided to artists and industry by this new mandate of flexibility. What are the short and long-term benefits and drawbacks to this new multi-tiered definition of ownership?
