As MUTEK enters its twelfth year, audiences continue to grow, this time with festival passports breaking sales records. For the first time ever, the festival occupies the 2500-capacity Metropolis for 4 nights in a row. Always a venue for groundbreaking live performance in the electronic arts, the Metropolis hosts two nights by veritable superstars of the genre presenting premieres of new shows. Ninja Tune's Amon Tobin builds a giant 4-storey monolith for the mapping extravaganza know as ISAM Live, a world premiere that goes on to tour the globe to universal acclaim. Meanwhile, Plastikman returns to the MUTEK stage after a six-year absence to present a new version of his live show, once again establishing his place as one of the leading innovators in creative technology.
Besides those two major performances, MUTEK 2011 is characterized by well-received performances featuring the best names from the international scene. Among them are Deepchord presents Echospace, Four Tet, Gold Panda, James Holden, Mika Vainio, Pole, and Traversable Wormhole.
The Canadian presence is equally strong, centered around a new generation of producers in the process of reshaping the national picture. The list features Arthur Oskan, Babe Rainbow, Billy Dalessandro, Comaduster, Danuel Tate, Hissy Fit, Jacques Greene, XI, and others.
MUTEK.MX and MUTEK.CL return after a hiatus with their biggest attendance numbers ever. Taking on Sony as a new presenting partners, the Mexico City edition rebounds with major showcases by Monolake, Kid Koala, Pearson Sound, Guillaume & the Coutu Dumonts, and others. Meanwhile, Chilean expat Nicolas Jaar returned home to headline the Santiago edition of MUTEK.CL.
