CONNECTING CITIES - The Networked City
The Networked City was the 2013 work theme of the Connecting Cities Network. Exploring the idea of establishing trans-local connections via artistic city-to-city interventions, the network produced 14 artworks that engaged the citizens of Berlin, Dessau, Marseille, Riga, Liverpool, Istanbul, Linz, Brussels, Helsinki, Madrid, and Melbourne in various interactions. Some of these projects took place in several cities simultaneously and thus created platforms for live intercultural exchange.
This panel will explore not only the idea of connecting different cities via artistic projects, but also other forms of connectivity and ‘networkedness’ that occur within our cities, for example:
- How can we open up commercial urban media networks, like the shopping centre screen networks that exist in many cities, for non-commercial purposes, to present art, culture, and other meaningful content?
- How can we imagine platforms of dialogue to connect city administrators with citizens in an age when the digital and the physical worlds merge?
