MUTEKLIVE007 - Lawrence

Live @ MUTEK Montréal 2006

For MUTEKLIVE 007, we look back to 2006 and a live set by none other than Dial Records mainstay Lawrence , who delivered a spare and moody set of the contemplative techno that has since become the calling card for a number of other producers.

By the time Peter Kersten performed in Montreal on this Friday night, he had been steadily building a reputable career as a purveyor of dark and sultry, textured techno that contained eery gothic overtones, which gave his sound a deep, silky quality.  His recording career had gotten started with the founding of Dial Records, which Kersten had formed with fellow producers Carten Jost and Paul Kominek (aka Turner).  Soon into its run of records, Dial was picked up by Cologne's Kompakt label for distribution, and this move not only brought Dial releases to a bigger platform, but also opened up a series of opportunities for Lawrence that would lead to having his third album, This Night Will Last Forever (2005), gain a promotional push from international electronic powerhouse NovaMute.

That record set the stage for Lawrence's appearance overseas, and this MUTEK 2006 performance was one of the first catalysts to developing the strong international following he enjoys today.  Listening back to this live set, it's not hard to see that Lawrence had already developed a distinct, almost trancey take on minimal techno that was, at the time, being likened to "micro-goth", a tag associates loosely to Superpitcher's 2005 mix album, Today , which got underway with seven-and-ahalf minutes from Lawrence's "Spark", which was his first stateside single, appearing on Ghostly International.

Since this 2006 MUTEK appearance, Lawrence has continued his streak of winners with a consistent roster of singles on labels such as Mule Electronic, liebe*detail, Spectral Sound, and of course his own Dial, which has become a force to be reckoned with in uts own right.  In 2007, he released Lowlights From the Past and Future , which collected many of his early singles and added a few choice new cuts along the way.
