Guillaume & - The Coutu Dumonts - MUTEKLIVE 006

June 3, 2006 // Live in Montreal

Guillaume Coutu Dumont, a native Montrealer who has recently moved to Berlin, began the decade as a fixture in the local community of upstarts who gathered around the first few MUTEKs.  His first recordings as part of the leftfield micro-house duo EGG (with Julien Roy, who has since moved on to Artificiel) began to crop up in 2003, and they bore the strong influence of Akufen's micro-sampling techniques, an aesthetic that had resonated with a number of young French-Quebecois producers at that time.

EGG was ultimately shortlived, as both young members were eager to explore many different avenues. On his own, Roy moved deeper into audio-visual experimentation while Guillaume honed his skills and distinguished his sound as a micro-house producer.  In 2005, Guillaume's talents began to evolve on record, often through collaborations.  There was Luci, a more techno-driven duo with graphic designer David-Emmanuel Fafard, and there was Chic Miniature, his more upbeat and Latin-flavoured collaboration with Argentine expat Ernesto Ferreyra.

But looking back, it was in 2006 and the dawn of the Guillaume & the Coutu Dumonts alias that Guillaume finally found his authentic calling as a producer, where all the elements of technique and vision began to harden into a more mature personality.  G&CD was -- and still very much still is -- the next logical step for Akufen's take on micro-house , but as you will hear in this set, by 2006 Guillaume had become bolder and more adventurous in his musical tastes, and what rises out of this live set is not only a distinct take of 21st century funk, but also a pitch-perfect blending of the many international flavours of percussion and rhythm that Guillaume had studied as a student.

The results, as the crowd on hand that day could attest, were euphoric.  This 66-minute outdoor live recordings was made on June 3, 2006.  Guillaume & the Coutu Dumonts were performing on a Saturday afternoon at Parc Jean-Drapeau, and so you can hear the audience reacting to every escalation in this multi-layered and intense journey through 60 years of samples that grow riskier as the set grows longer.  It was also a catapult for Guillaume to the international following he enjoys today.
