Tim Hecker - MUTEKLIVE 009

May 29, 2003 // Live in Montreal

Fridays, MUTEKLIVE revisits live sets of key figures from the last decade of Canadian electronic music.  Tim Hecker's performance alongside 242 Pilots captures him soon after the release of his international breakthrough, Radio Amor.

Back in 2003, Hecker had only recently broken away from the techno moniker Jetone that had initially made his name.  He'd released several albums of granular ambient music on Montreal's Alien8 Recordings, including the spectacular early work Haunt Me, Haunt Me, Do It Again, but by the time Radio Amor came around on Mille Plateaux, it opened up a side door in laptop experimentation no one knew was there.

Here, Hecker is no longer just working with drones and feedback, he's primarily shaping emotions with noise, a feature that got him immediately compared to the Fennesz of Endless Summer.  But upon closer inspection, as this 2003 set reveals, Hecker occupies a very different shade of post-guitar composition than Christian Fennesz.  He's more a strident minimalist who holds back his melodic edge until it can't be held back any longer.

Put on the headphones, sit back, and enjoy.
