After garnering broad underground attention with his myriad EPs on labels such as Dekmantel and Rush Hour Recordings, word of San Proper’s singular disco-house, laced with semi-earnest, semi-loony vocal extras, quickly spread with the release of his debut album, Animal (2012). In the studio, the Dutchman’s organic foundation embraces live percussion and computer-generated rhythms, onto which he then sprinkles sampled, synthesized sounds. His revealing lyrics allude to the ups and downs of life, akin to a singer-songwriter’s confessional diary – minus the self-serious tone. His practice draws upon electronic music and an indie-rock spirit, which translates into energetic live performances that display the full breadth of his exuberant persona. Swimming in a sea of synths, guitars and bass, San Proper doesn’t discriminate between analog and digital, instigating an inspired communion of rhythmic euphoria and eclectic experimentation. He returns to MUTEK after a thrilling 2010 Piknic set.
