Hailing from Canada’s West Coast, Daniel Gardner alias Frivolous, spent many years in Berlin before making his way back home. Firing on all creative cylinders, he began to produce music in the late ‘90s with a classical piano training in his back pocket. Besides his impressive back catalogue of EPs, Frivolous has released three albums, including the latest, Meteorology (2011), on the Cadenza imprint. His tasty concentrate of tech-house, imbued with jazz and swing infusions, elevates the style to new heights, with non-traditional sonorities and a minimal bent. Gardner’s creative spirit, which recalls that of Matthew Herbert – an inspiration for the Canadian – also manifests itself in his home-made, DIY creation of musical instruments such as the “Frivolous Patented Electromagnetic Knife," which brings unique texture to his live performances. After performing at MUTEK’s Spanish and Mexican editions, Frivolous returns to MUTEK Montreal for the first time since his noteworthy 2004 performance.
