Sweden’s Axel Willner, who records as The Field, has mastered the art of summoning a sentiment of well being with faint impression of sorrow, creating a kind of ecstatic melancholy held in suspension. His debut album, From Here We Go Sublime (2007), appeared on the venerable Kompakt label and quickly became one of the most critically lauded albums of that year. A few months later, he performed on Canadian soil for the first time at MUTEK’s 9th edition, generating a great deal of enthusiasm for the live renditions of his music. He has since released the equally stunning, Yesterday And Today (2009), and Looping State Of Mind (2011). The Field specializes in producing a blissed-out, circular form of trance that matches its minimalism in emotive gesture. Solo, or in a band context and with his uniquely mesmerizing atmospherics, Willner is one of the flagship artists of a pioneering label that will blow out 20 candles at this year’s festival.
