Steeped in the tradition of experimental West Coast hip hop, Tokimonsta claims her rightful place among renowned producers such as Peanut Butter Wolf and Madlib. As with, Nosaj Thing, she cut her teeth at Low End Theory in Los Angeles, where she developed and refined her progressive production mojo. Her debut album Midnight Menu (2010) was released on Listen Up, a sub-label of Japanese distributor Art Union. On it, Tokimonsta took great pleasure in confounding the listener with her mutable inclinations: a savvy blend of old-world funk and futuristic techno snippets. The first woman of the influential Brainfeeder collective headed by Flying Lotus, she presents her new album Half Shadows, to the MUTEK audience for the first time. Featuring collaborations with Kool Keith, Gavin Turek and New York production duo MNDR, the album carries on with Tokimonsta’s fusion of a certain “vintage” sensibility coupled with more progressive elements.
