Montreal-based glitch-hop producer VLooper is a key figure in the city’s flourishing experimental beat scene. He unexpectedly coined the term “piu piu”, which has come to define a certain West Coast-indebted, laser-sampling, spacey bass sound. Besides his work with subversive, tongue-in-cheek Québécois hip hop collective, Alaclair Ensemble and the side projects of its members KenLo and Eman, the futuristic beatmaker has brought momentum to the popular Artbeat Montreal nights, and has collaborated with modern soul vocalist (and wife), Modlee, on two tempo-shifting, smoothly cosmic releases. His largely instrumental debut album Snowloops (2012), the first release for Montreal digital label, Music Is My Sanctuary, lays bare his hybrid affections. From mystical synths and funk samples to dissident bass motifs, VLooper works up an auspicious patchwork of rhythm.
