Vancouver-based visual and sound artist Andy Dixon, expresses himself through otherworldly contrasts, startling trial and error, and rampant repackaging of raw materials. His intuitive process encompasses paintings, drawings and graphic design – all of it teeming with vibrant colour. He runs experimental record label Ache Records (Death From Above, Hot Hot Heat), and records as Secret Mommy, an alias that showcases his crafty command of both popular and esoteric samples – Shania Twain, frogs, eating sounds and squash courts, to name but a few. As part of his organic sound practice here, Dixon samples and reconstructs the soul and signature of a city by way of expressive sound portraiture. Based on a Canada Council for the Arts music program commission, for MUTEK, Dixon presents Montréal in E ♭ Major, as an improvised audio-only performance created entirely from field recordings Dixon harvested during a weeklong trip to Montréal. Dixon’s final work exists as a digital release on MUTEK rec.
