Comprised of Hirshi (trumpet/DJ), Cosmo D (cello/Ableton) and Kroba (sax/Ableton), this Brooklyn-based experimental bass music trio didn’t become the toast of New York’s discerning musical class by fluke. Their sophisticated, off-kilter layering of ‘real’ instruments – think trumpet, clarinet, cello, sax, and flute – atop arpeggiated rhythms and digitized samples yields a tidal wave of virtuosic melodies very much in line with their moniker’s insinuation of multiple sonic islands. Formed in late 2010, their rhythmically adventurous works combine a shared love for improvisation with their respective backgrounds in orchestral jazz, classical, and modern production techniques. They’ve released a handful of buoyant, kinetic EPs (many of which on their own, eponymous imprint), while a collaborative album with US bass music producer Grenier is on its way. Their unwaveringly intricate instrumental cuts are just as tempo-pushing in their live renditions, thanks to their commitment to Ableton Live-assisted performances while playing and processing their instruments in real time. In many ways, they’re the quintessential masters of ceremony of the modern electronic age.
