A multidisciplinary artist raised in Tennessee and currently based in San Francisco, where she is engaged in Stanford’s Computer Music PhD program, Holly Herndon has performed her vocal-saturated electronic compositions in gallery spaces and music venues all over the world. Merging the disparate electronic music realms of club scenes and academia, Herndon’s intricately scored music reflects her mentorship by John Bischoff, James Fei, Maggi Payne and Fred Frith, her brief stint in electroclash band Electrocute, and the influences of contemporary experimental house and techno. Among her eclectic mix of collaborators she counts Hieroglyphic Being, producer Jlin, Iranian philosopher Reza Negarestani, engineer Mat Dryhurst, and projection-mapping artist Barry Threw. Her 2012 debut album Movement, on RVNG Int., received critical praise for its nuanced vocal manipulation (primarily on her own voice), otherworldly drones and playful pop references. Her latest EP, Chorus, features even more vocal and laptop wizardry, a collage-like video directed by Japanese artist Akihiko Taniguchi, and a website, designed by artists Simone Niquille and Adam Harvey, featuring over 30 manipulatable samples within a song, open to public remixing.
